Trying to find your space in a neurotypical world
For many autistic adults, daily life can feel like trying to navigate a world that is turned up to maximum volume. You might spend your day “masking” – forcing eye contact, script-planning conversations, and trying to blend in – only to come home completely exhausted and burnt out.
When your energy is drained, simple tasks can feel monumental, and everyday sensory environments can feel overwhelming. But beneath this exhaustion is a unique, passionate, and detail-oriented mind. Therapy isn’t about changing who you are; it’s about giving you a safe space to drop the mask, understand your sensory needs, and learn to thrive in a neurotypical world on your own terms.
At Colibri Neurowellness, we provide a warm, neurodiversity-affirming space where you can safely drop the mask and be your authentic self.
ASD Therapy for Adults | Kitchener & Waterloo
What is ASD Therapy?
Adult Autism Therapy isn’t about changing who you are; it’s about giving you the space to drop your “mask”, embrace your unique strengths, and build practical, everyday strategies to help you thrive.
Trade the exhaustion of trying to fit in for the freedom of being yourself.
Together, we will explore your unique sensory profile to understand what overstimulates or comforts you. For example, if you find yourself easily overwhelmed by bright, loud, or crowded spaces, we can help you confidently advocate for your physical and sensory needs. By focusing on your natural strengths rather than forcing you into traditional, exhausting routines, this therapy empowers you to overcome feelings of disconnection, build meaningful relationships, and create a fulfilling life that truly fits who you are.
- Processing a new or late-in-life autism diagnosis
- Deciding when or how to share your diagnosis with others

- Needing strict routines to feel safe and calm
- Managing intense emotions when plans or routines change

What can Autism Therapy for Adults help with?
No Masking Required
Find Your Authentic Self
Therapy helps you let go of the exhausting pressure to constantly hide your autistic traits just to make others comfortable.
Instead of spending an entire social gathering forcing eye contact and script-planning your next sentence, you will learn to give yourself permission to look away, take sensory breaks, and socialize in a way that feels natural and far less draining.
Recovering From & Preventing Burnout
We will work together to help you recognize the early warning signs of deep mental and physical exhaustion so you can build a lifestyle that protects your energy.
When you feel a crash coming on, instead of forcing yourself to “push through” and making it worse, you will learn to use a personalized recovery plan to rest, temporarily reduce demands, and recharge without guilt.
Managing Sensory Sensitivities
Therapy helps you identify your specific sensory triggers and design practical, everyday ways to navigate overwhelming environments.
For instance, if grocery shopping typically leaves you feeling anxious and dizzy, you and your therapist might plan trips during quiet hours, incorporate noise-canceling headphones, and establish a calming post-shopping routine to reset your nervous system.
Navigating Special Interests & Hyperfocus
We can help you harness the power of your intense passions while ensuring they don’t accidentally lead to neglecting your physical health or daily responsibilities.
Instead of losing track of time and forgetting to eat, sleep, or drink water during a deep-dive research session, you will learn to set gentle, neurodivergent-friendly transitions that allow you to enjoy your hobbies fully without sacrificing your well-being.
Advocating For Your Needs
Therapy helps you find the right words to explain your boundaries and request accommodations at work or in your personal relationships.
Instead of quietly suffering through bright office lights or open-concept noise, you can practice a comfortable, low-stress script to ask your manager for a desk in a dimmer area or permission to wear light-filtering glasses.
Navigating Social Situations
We will help you understand unwritten social rules, manage communication differences, and build deeper connections without losing yourself in the process.
For example, you will learn how to explain your need for quiet, post-work isolation to your partner, friends, or family members so they understand you aren’t ignoring them; you are simply recharging your battery so you can connect with them fully later on.
Managing Transitions & Unexpected Changes
Therapy helps you build resilience and coping strategies for when plans change suddenly, which can otherwise feel incredibly jarring and distressing.
For example, if a last-minute schedule change at work typically ruins your entire day, you and your therapist can develop a “pivot plan”, which is a set of familiar, comforting steps to ground your nervous system and help you regain a sense of control when the unexpected happens.
Enhancing Emotional Regulation
Therapy provides a compassionate space to understand the intense emotional storms that can happen when your brain is completely overloaded.
Rather than feeling shame after a meltdown or shutdown, you will learn to recognize the subtle physical warning signs of emotional overwhelm, allowing you to safely retreat to a quiet space and use self-soothing techniques before your system reaches its breaking point.

Approaches Used During ASD Therapy Sessions
We use evidence-based approaches that are personalized to you. Depending on your needs, your Colibri NeuroWellness Therapist may integrate:
Neuroaffirming Care
This approach is the foundation of everything we do, and it simply means we view your autism as a natural brain difference, not a disease or something that needs to be “fixed.” In our sessions, we focus on respecting and embracing how your mind naturally works. We will work together to help you let go of any old feelings of shame about being “different” and support you in living as your true, authentic self.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
While traditional CBT is common in therapy, your therapist will adapt it specifically to fit how your brain processes emotions and your environment.
Instead of just telling you to change your thoughts, together we will look at the big picture; such as how sensory overload or daily stress might be fueling your anxiety or sadness. By finding the real root of your stress, this will help you feel better without ignoring the very real challenges you face.
Comfort and Coping Skills (Modified DBT)
This modified Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) approach focuses on mindfulness, emotional balance, and getting through tough moments when plans change unexpectedly.
Together, we will build your very own “comfort toolkit” filled with sensory tools, self-soothing ideas, and easy scripts you can use to set boundaries when you feel overwhelmed or pushed to your limit.
Body-Mind Connection (Somatic Support)
Because being autistic might mean you experience the physical world very intensely, we use body-based tools to help you manage overwhelm. You will learn to tune into your body’s early warning signs of stress; like a racing heart, tight shoulders, or a sudden loss of energy.
By catching these signs early, you can use gentle grounding techniques to calm your nervous system before you reach a breaking point.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT is incredibly helpful because it teaches you to work with your thoughts and feelings rather than fighting against them.
In our sessions, we will practice accepting your natural limits, such as needing quiet downtime after a busy day, without any guilt. This allows you to stop forcing yourself to do what others expect and start building a life based on your own passions and values.
Practical Executive Functioning Coaching
This is a hands-on, collaborative way to help you tackle the daily tasks that feel overwhelming. We won’t try to force you to use rigid planners or systems that don’t make sense to you. Instead, we will work together to design custom, stress-free ways to help you start chores, manage your time, and stay organized in a way that actually feels easy and natural for your brain.

Questions About ASD Therapy
What is ASD and what causes it?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not an illness or a disease to be cured, but rather a natural, lifelong variation in how the brain develops and processes information. Being autistic simply means your brain is wired differently, which uniquely shapes how you experience sensory input, process emotions, and communicate with others.
While there is no single cause, scientific research shows that autism is primarily biological and highly genetic, influencing how the brain’s pathways connect from birth. Ultimately, autism is a fundamental part of who you are; not a collection of deficits, but a unique cognitive style with its own valuable strengths, boundaries, and needs.
Does ASD look different in different genders?
Yes, autism can look very different across genders, largely because societal expectations often force women, girls, and non-binary individuals to become highly skilled at “masking” (or hiding) their natural traits to fit in.
While boys and men are often diagnosed earlier because their traits may be more easily recognized, women and gender-diverse individuals are frequently diagnosed much later in life. They may express their autism through quiet observation, mimicking social cues, and channeling their deep focus into socially accepted interests, which can lead to their struggles being overlooked.
No matter your gender, experiencing the world this way can be incredibly exhausting, and recognizing these unique presentations is the first step toward finding the right support and validation.
What do the terms “neurodivergent” and “masking” mean?
“Neurodivergent” is a respectful term used to describe people whose brains work differently from what is considered typical (“neurotypical”). It is not a medical diagnosis, but a way to acknowledge real differences in attention, learning, and how someone experiences the world.
“Masking” means trying to hide or cover up differences in how you think, feel, or behave in order to fit in or appear more typical. This can involve copying others, holding back your natural reactions, or working extra hard to meet expectations. Masking can be exhausting and sometimes leads to feeling worn out or makes it harder for others to notice and understand your needs.
Our neuro-affirming approach to therapy sessions aims to reduce the pressure to mask.
Do I need an official autism diagnosis to start therapy?
No, you do not need a formal diagnosis to work with us. Many adults struggle to access formal testing, or are just beginning to explore their neurodivergence. Whether you are officially diagnosed, self-identified, or simply questioning if you might be on the spectrum, you are welcome here. We focus on supporting your unique experiences and challenges, not on requiring paperwork.
How is adult autism therapy different from traditional talk therapy?
Traditional therapy often focuses on changing your thoughts or behaviours to help you fit in. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming, meaning we don’t view autism as a problem to be cured.
Instead of pressuring you to conform to neurotypical standards, we focus on helping you understand your sensory needs, recover from masking-related burnout, and build practical tools that actually work for your specific brain.
Are College and University Students covered for autism therapy/counselling?
Yes. If you have a health insurance plan through your college or university, this often covers therapy and counselling services with Registered Psychotherapists, Registered Social Workers, and Clinical Psychologists.
However it is always best to confirm with your college or university regarding your coverage details as the coverage amounts are subject to change.
For example, as of the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic years:
- Wilfred Laurier University (WLU): Undergraduate students covered under the StudentCare health plan are eligible for 80% coverage per visit up to a maximum of $800 per policy year.
- University of Waterloo (UW): Undergraduate students covered under the WUSA StudentCare health plan are eligible for 80% coverage per visit up to a maximum of $1,250 per policy year. Graduate students under the GSA plan also have coverage up to $1,250 per year at 80% per visit.
Can therapy help me if I was diagnosed late in life?
Absolutely. Receiving an autism diagnosis as an adult can bring up a wave of mixed emotions; from relief to grief. Therapy provides a safe space to process this new understanding of yourself.
We can help you reframe your past experiences with self-compassion, understand why certain things have always felt so exhausting, and learn how to navigate your future with confidence.
Do I have to do things that make me feel uncomfortable during sessions?
No, sessions are entirely collaborative and move at your pace. We will never force you to make eye contact, sit still, or engage in ways that drain your energy or make you feel uncomfortable. You are welcome to use fidget tools, look away, or take sensory breaks during our time together.
During sessions, we will focus on practical conversations, building coping tools, and exploring strategies that make your daily life easier and more comfortable.
Can therapy help me with my job and friendships/relationships?
Yes. We can work together on practical ways to navigate the workplace and social life without losing yourself.
This includes learning how to recognize and communicate your boundaries, practicing low-stress scripts to advocate for accommodations at work, and helping loved ones understand your need for downtime so you can maintain healthy, fulfilling connections.
